The wild landscape of Exmoor National Park has more than a hint of romance to it, which is something Duxhams shares. This substantial and evocative property combines the classic style of a deep-in-the-country lodge with all the refinement needed for a supremely luxurious self-catering break. Think days spent sun-soaking in the south-facing garden, afternoons grilling in the outdoor kitchen and evenings sipping fizz in the hot tub or around the fire pit.
Devon’s famous moorland is on your doorstep and there are characterful local villages to discover. For a quintessentially Devonish experience, head to the north coast to wander wave-washed beaches and dramatic cliffs. A cream tea or fish and chips are, of course, non-negotiable.
Looking for a unique country house where you can enjoy a memorable get-together with friends and family? Head to Duxhams.
Attention has been given to every element at Duxhams. The meticulously restored interiors are rich in original details and decorated in serene heritage hues with occasional splashes of contemporary colour. Plush furnishings and soft leather sofas invite you to curl up or stretch out. In the sophisticated public rooms, there are lots of airy spaces and cosy nooks for everyone in your party to find a favourite spot.
A well-appointed kitchen, complete with Aga, has all the necessities you’ll need for preparing a feast and offers plenty of room should you have caterers coming. When it’s time to gather together, the spacious open-plan dining area is the perfect place for celebratory meals. Afterwards, retire to the generous living room and luxuriate in the warmth of the wood burner while you play games, catch up with old friends and propose a toast or two.
On the two upper floors, you’ll find eight en-suite bedrooms – wide-open valley views draw you in as you throw open the curtains in the morning. The décor is elegant and distinctive, with every consideration given to comfort. Seven rooms have king-sized or double beds, while the eighth is a dorm to sleep five children. Tucked in the eaves and featuring sturdy exposed beams, it’s the perfect hideaway for midnight feasts and swapping tall tales by moonlight.
The more-than-generous grounds at Duxhams are spread over fourteen-and-a-half acres and give you a real lord-of-the-manor feel. As well as manicured lawns, you’ll find grassy fields, an orchard buzzing busily with pollinators and a belt of woodland rustling with wildlife. The property is located within the Exmoor Dark Sky Reserve, so when night falls, a dazzling array of stars twinkles overhead.
Take a short walk and find yourself in the bustling heart of Dulverton village. It’s the southern gateway to Exmoor National Park and an excellent place for indulging in a cream tea, tucking into lunch at a gastro-pub or sipping a glass of wine as you watch the world go by. If you fancy a spot of browsing, there are independent boutiques and galleries exhibiting local art to discover.
Exmoor National Park is, of course, the star attraction of the area. Sheep graze the bracken and there are plenty of birds for keen spotters to spy. To see iconic Exmoor ponies and elusive red deer, take a guided tour of the moor. The wilderness of the rugged landscape invites you to follow one of the many trails through wooded valleys to rocky outcrops where you can fill your lungs with the freshest of air. There’s a walk to suit every level of fitness, with a favourite being the stroll up to Dunkery Beacon. Here, at the park’s highest point, you can see the picture-perfect landscape of Devon and Somerset unfurled below you.
Leisurely days out can be spent at the pretty seaside village of Porlock or the bustling harbour town of Watchet, both of which offer access to outstanding coastal scenery.
